“We want to take the listener on a journey with us, and I think the best way to do that is to make the journey vivid, intense, emotional, and energetic.”
– Jeremy Ledbetter
Whether catching him live or on disc, there’s an edge-of-your-seat spirit to hearing jazz pianist Jeremy Ledbetter and his trio play. Like listening to a favorite jam band from your youth, the experience tickles the soul and staggers the mind through its high energy and tight interplay, its beauty and complexity. Informed by a decade of personal travel and deep immersion in the rhythmic traditions of Venezuela, Brazil, Trinidad and Cuba, the classically trained Toronto native has evolved into a world jazz pioneer.
Winner of the 2025 Juno Award for Best Group Jazz Album, “Gravity” seamlessly integrates these disparate cultural and stylistic elements for a wonderfully compelling whole. Together with Grammy-winning drummer Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy) and renowned bassist Rich Brown (Steve Coleman and Five Elements), Jeremy steers the powerhouse ensemble into full-color storytelling mode. Right out of the gate, “Flight” sets a mood for punch and adventure, while “Song of the River” tumbles the flow around water sounds and Venezuelan percussion. “Port of Spain” tips a hat to Trinidad’s Carnival street party complete with steel drums, and “The Stars in Her Sky” gifts us the album’s most beautiful and romantic song. “Every musical genre is like its own language,” Jeremy says, “and if you want to be able to communicate you have to learn to speak it.”
